Cutting a post-tension cable is dangerous and expensive. We scan the slab first, find what's in it, and mark safe zones to core or cut right on the concrete.
Ground Conditions in Orlando
Orlando sits on sand over the limestone of the Floridan Aquifer, and that rock is why Central Florida gets sinkholes. In May 1981, a sinkhole in nearby Winter Park opened about 300 feet wide and 80 feet deep when the ground dropped into a cavity in the limestone. Most of the city's soils are sandy, with the water table anywhere from about 2 and a half to 5 feet down, and some areas carry a loamy, clay-rich layer underneath.
Sand is good news for radar: federal soil surveys rate most of Orlando's sandy ground high or very high for GPR, so we can usually see a long way down. Where the clay layer shows up, the signal gets cut short, and we tell you that instead of calling the ground clear. Radar can also pick up loose or disturbed soil that's worth a closer look before you set a slab or heavy equipment on it.
What’s Under the Streets in Orlando
In Orlando, OUC supplies water across about 200 square miles from seven treatment plants that draw on the Lower Floridan Aquifer, and it supplies the power across much of the city. About 68% of OUC's electric lines are already underground. The city runs the sewer, and Peoples Gas runs the gas. Reclaimed water is available in some parts of town, and Water Conserv II has been piping treated water nearly 20 miles out to citrus groves since 1986.
On October 2, 2022, right after Hurricane Ian, a 36-inch sewer force main broke, affecting Audubon Park, Mills 50, College Park and the Lake Ivanhoe area. The city is now replacing Lift Station 2, which is more than 80 years old, for $19.5 million. A lot of Orlando's buried pipe is old, and a lot of its power is buried right next to it. With two thirds of OUC's lines underground, a trench or bore in Orlando has a good chance of crossing live power.
We work across Orlando, including Downtown, Lake Nona, Baldwin Park, College Park, MetroWest, and the tourist corridor, plus nearby Winter Park, Kissimmee, Sanford, and Winter Garden.
